Gambling in the United States Gambling has increased in the last couple of years. Is it because people are addicted? There are two types of gambling: Compulsive Gambling and pathological gambling. Compulsive Gambling is when people have a hard time resisting to gamble. Pathological Gambling is when there is a need to gamble for money or for large amounts of money. Also people don’t know when to quit when they are pathological gamblers. Both types of gambling have major side effects, and can both lead to serious gambling problems. â€Å"Studies show that 82% of people gamble. In 1975 only 61% gambled (Richard E. Vatz).† Gambling has increased rapidly in the United States. Many Americans who gamble often lose more than†¦show more content†¦Vatz).† Families may see these signs with a family member who gambles excessively. There are help lines to call if there is a problem. Gambling has been around for many years. â€Å"Gambling has been around as early as 1775(Richard E. Vatz).† â€Å"Dice and playing cards can be traced back to primitive people who cast bones or sticks into the air. Even in this country’s early history there was a lottery to raise money for the colonial army in 1775 (Lee S. Weinberg).† Even in the old days people used to gamble. As gambling grows in the United States it continues to be a problem. Compulsive gambling is diagnosable, it is a treatable illness that affects the gambler. Its not like a drug, but its just as bad as a drug addiction. There are many negative setbacks to gambling. Such as there is a lot of potential for crimes, or murders. People that lose money and are sore losers may say they â€Å"got cheated.† They may want there money back and cant get it, so it could carry on to a fight. Fights lead to jail, and sometimes death. A definition of gambling is â€Å"to play any game at a chance for stakes.† Gambling is also a sin, in the bible it says that you should not gamble. Therefor if you gamble you are doing wrong.
